You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take... I had a Denon DL-110 cartridge lying around in my hobby corner for a while, unfortunately with a broken cantilever. This type of cartridge doesn't feature a replaceable stylus, and a retip was not an option because the DL-110 is not that expensive.
But, throwing it away is such a waste! So, in stead of doing that, I decided to take the plunge and try to repair the cantilever. First, I used a thin needle to reshape the ends of the two pieces of the cantilever. I then carefully measured the diameter and looked for a piece of 0.35mm wire to use as a 'splint' to put the pieces back together.
Lastly, I inserted a very short piece of wire into the cantilever, centered and straightened the needle, and secured it with a tiny drop of super glue.
This can never work, right? But it did! The DL-110 is happily producing sound again, as if nothing had happened! And the sound? As I am used to from this cartridge, beautifully spacious and open.
Of course, I don't have the illusion that the cartridge is now in perfect condition. But the result far exceeded my expectations. It just goes to show that sometimes you just have to dare to try something.
